Small business plan

Starting a small business takes 90% planning...
10% execution

Do you remember those cards your grade school teacher used to pin up on the bulletin board to remind you to plan ahead?

The print started out fine, but because someone didn't plan ahead, they ran out of room, causing the letters to be all scrunched up at the edge.

The point was to show what could happen without planning ahead. That was good advice.

Starting a business is a big step and it takes planning. Ask anyone who has done it successfully. They will tell you they started with a business plan.

A successful outcome requires a good business plan

You need to ask yourself...

  • what will your site be about?

  • what will you sell?

  • who is your target market?

  • how will visitors find your website?

  • what will your costs be?

A business plan helps you think about and establish clear, concise near-term, mid-term and long-term goals. It also helps keep you focused and on track.

Other uses might include establishing a line of credit, or if you seek venture capital, you will need a business plan.

Developing your plan

Where do you start? There are dozens of software programs available to guide you through the process. All you need to do is answer some questions and the software does the rest.

Business Plan Pro is a good option. It comes with hundreds of industry-specific sample plans, it's easy to use, and it doesn't cost a lot.

The program wizard will walk you through a step-by-step interview that will touch on every facet of business...

  • start-up costs

  • products

  • marketing plans

  • sales strategies

  • cost of sales

  • competitors

  • web site development

  • employees

  • financials

Once the interview process is complete, the program creates a complete business plan, including spreadsheet tables and charts, that can be printed or exported. If you have an existing business, you can even link to QuickBooks Pro so you can compare actual results to the plan.
